QITAI ROAD - XINJIANG - CHINA - DECEMBER 14, 2008: Oil well in Qitai oilfield, near Urumqi. The western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region became China's second largest oil production base in 2008 with an output of 27.4 million tonnes, up 1 million tonnes from 2007, expecting to hit 28 million tonnes in 2009. Reserves are estimated at 20.9 billion tonnes of oil, an ammount that hardly reaches the real need for oil on the recently growing Chinese economy. The CNPC is under permanent pressure to find new oil sources and drill further and deeper. (Photo by Carlos Spottorno/Reportage by Getty Images)
