HOTAN COUNTY - XINJIANG - CHINA - DECEMBER 13, 2007:  Syncretist muslims at prayer in front of a graves. Every visitor leaves a piece of cloth, fur or plastic as a sign os respect to the dead Imam. This tradition is very similar to the buddhist tradition in its external form. Buddists hang clothes in graves and temples too. Xinjiang has a vast southern border with Tibet and the are historical records of buddhist presence in Xinjiang since 1st century BC. Islam arrived in Xinjiang in the 7 th century, and Hotan was conquered by Islam in 11 th century. Acording to orthodox sunnites this is a delectable superstition and is totally unacceptable under their understanding of Islam.
